A bill updating the law on making anatomical gifts moved quickly through the Kansas Senate and a House, is now on its way to a conference committee.
Rep. Mike O”Neal, R-Hutchinson, asked the House on Friday to assign House Bill 2010 to a conference committee.
“The Senate made two amendments to the bill, and it may be OK, but we want to make sure it didn”t destroy the uniformity of the act,” O”Neal said.
The Senate”s amendments mainly concern donor registry cards and drivers” licenses marked “donor.”
The bill updates the state”s Uniform Anatomical Gift Act. Last year, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws spoke to the Special Committee on Judiciary during the Interim Session about the importance of updating the law so it is uniform across the nation.
The updated law strengthens individual”s rights to donate organs and allows family members to donate the deceased”s organs if there is no record of the deceased person” intent.
