Childhood Obesity and Kansas Schools

The U.S. is in the midst of a crisis. According to the Institute of Medicine, the rate of childhood obesity has more than tripled over the last 30 years for children ages 6 to 11 and doubled for those ages 12 to 19. Policies and practices to reverse this trend have been slow developing. This study examines nutrition, physical education and physical activity in Kansas public schools to determine what is being done to address the crisis and gauge the capacity of schools to do more. While school officials believe they have a role to play, they are conflicted about their level of responsibility and what steps to take.
