Kansas Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer appeared Wednesday night on the Fox Business television program to discuss his efforts to reform Medicaid in the state.
Gov. Sam Brownback has tapped Colyer to lead a multi-agency task force that is charged with cutting the state’s Medicaid costs between $200 million and $400 million in time for the fiscal 2013 budget year, which begins July 1, 2012. Both men are Republicans opposed to the Affordable Care Act.
Brownback recently sent a letter to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius asking her to waive the law’s so-called maintenance-of-effort requirements and give the state a Medicaid block grant, which essentially would allow Kansas to spend its federal Medicaid dollars any way it chooses.
