The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City has awarded 16 non-profit organizations a total of $789,929 in grants.
Applicants define their own grant needs for awards up to $75,000.
“We are proud to award these…to support organizations in our service area who are working diligently to help eliminate barriers to quality health for the uninsured and underserved,” Steve Roling, the foundation’s chief executive, said in a prepared statement.
Grant applications are accepted throughout the year and awards are generally made within eight weeks, foundation officials said.
An organization may submit one application per year. The foundation plans to award $3.9 million in applicant-defined grants this year. More information is available on the foundation’s website.

Coalition of Hispanic Women Against Cancer — $38,000
To support programs that address breast and cervical cancer disparities among Latinos.
Dismas House of Kansas City — $73,080
To improve the Missouri Access to Recovery program.
First Call Alcohol Drug Prevention and Recovery — $50,000
For an initiative to increase the capacity of Kansas City metro-area behavioral health and wrap-around service providers to integrate client service delivery with primary health.
Gillis Center, Inc — $39,834
To provide abused and neglected children with therapy.
Heartland Habitat for Humanity — $20,900
For the Brush with Kindness program that provides wheelchair ramps in homes of 20 low-income families in Wyandotte County.
House of Hope Inc. — $34,630
To provide support and parenting classes for families dealing with the impact of domestic and sexual violence.
Lazarus Ministries of Grand Avenue Temple — $67,540
To support a free health clinic run by medical students from the UMKC School of Medicine.
Legal Aid of Western Missouri — $65,000
To support the Migrant Farmworker Medical Case Management Project which provides medical case managers to migrant farmworkers and their families.
Mid America Chapter, National Multiple Sclerosis Society — $25,000
To support a program that provides funds to eligible individuals with multiple sclerosis to meet financial emergencies, pay for transportation and other cost of supplies.
Missouri Jobs with Justice — $45,000
To advocate for implementation of the Affordable Care Act, for the Kansas City Earnings Tax and for revenue-side solutions to Missouri’s budget challenges.
Partners in Public Health, Inc. — $30,000
To continue to expand smoke-free environments in indoor public places and work places and smoke-free school grounds through HCF’s service area.
ReDiscover — $75,000
To improve technology and add telephone features that will interface with electronic medical records and appointment reminders.
SAFEHOME Inc. — $70,000
To provide play and art therapy for children who have experienced domestic violence.
University of Kansas Center for Research Inc. — $60,000
To provide evaluation of community-based mental health services for children.
TLC for Children and Families, Inc. — $65,000
To expand therapeutic residential treatment available to children and youth.
United Community Services of Johnson County — $30,945
To support the implementation of the Johnson County Mental Health and Criminal Justice Intercept Project.
