The North Newton City Council on Monday adopted an ordinance that prohibits smoking in workplaces and indoor public places.
The 5-0 vote came after two months of fine-tuning the ordinance”s wording, said North Newton City Clerk Sher Klassen Neufeld.
There are no exemptions for indoor smoking in the city, Klassen Neufeld said. The ordinance will take effect as soon as it is published, she said, which she expected to happen later this week.
North Newton is one of seven cities in Harvey County where elected officials have proposed prohibiting smoking in workplaces and public places. It is the fourth city in that county to adopt such an ordinance.
The city is the 26th Kansas community to adopt some form of a ban on smoking in public places. Johnson and Harvey counties have both outlawed smoking in public places in the unincorporated areas of those counties.
