TOPEKA, Feb. 19
The Kansas Senate has approved a bill authorizing a “Breast Cancer Research and Outreach” license tag.
The Senate voted 39-1 last week to pass Senate Bill 198. The license plates would sport a pink breast cancer awareness ribbon wrapped around a sunflower. For every plate sold, $50 would go to the University of Kansas Cancer Center for breast cancer research and outreach.
Sen. Barbara Allen, R-Overland Park, a breast cancer survivor and the bill”s chief sponsor, said the money would help the KU cancer center reach its goal of obtaining the Comprehensive Cancer Center designation from the National Cancer Institute.
“Women in Kansas should not have to travel to Texas, Minnesota or Massachusetts to obtain the highest standard of care for treatment of breast cancer,” she told the Senate Tax Committee. “We deserve to receive the best cancer care available right here in the Midwest, at home with our family and friends to support us.”
The bill now goes to the House.
