The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System will grow by three hospitals.
The Rocky Mountain News reported Wednesday that the Kansas-based Catholic health organization is buying St. Joseph Hospital in Denver; Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Co., and Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, Co. The deal is scheduled to close mid-2007, and the terms were not disclosed, the newspaper reported.
The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System now owns the Denver hospital and half of the other two through their involvement in Exempla Healthcare. The Sisters of Charity “co-sponsor” the company with the LMC Community Foundation, a Denver-based Lutheran group.
Under the deal, the Kansas-based corporation will purchase the remaining share of Exempla Healthcare from the LMC Community Foundation.
All three acquisitions will follow Catholic religious and moral directives. Abortions, vasectomies and some elective surgeries will not be performed at the hospitals after the sale is complete, the newspaper reported.
The sale brings the total of hospitals owned by the Sisters of Charity to 11. In addition to St. Francis Health Center in Topeka; Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., and Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth, the organization owns hospitals in California, Colorado and Montana. The Sisters of Charity also own four stand-alone clinics.
