The state treasurer announced today this his office will partner with hospitals to try to return personal property inadvertently left behind at the facilities by patients or their families.
“This new partnership with the Kansas Hospital Association will take the responsibility of storing items and finding the owners off of area hospitals allowing them to remain focused on patient care,” said State Treasurer Dennis McKinney in a prepared statement.
“The property is anything that a patient brings to the hospital and then is left behind. Many times this type of property includes clothing items, jewelry, checkbooks, cash, and anything that is carried in with a patient, either in a bag or pocket,” said Tara Gillum, an agency spokesperson.
Gillum said the hospitals will fill out forms with information about the property and what is known about the owners.
“They will then send the items along with the forms to the State Treasurer’s Office. We will store items in our vault and add the name of the owner of the property to our database in order to try to return the items to the owner or their heirs,” she said.
